Waterbike

The competition was held in Berlin, Germany in 2015.

About project

Project Waterbike is integrated as part of the teaching at the undergraduate studies of Naval architecture in the cases: Ship design, Design of composite ships and special materials and Technology in shipbuilding. Teaching is performed by CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) methodology with very few lectures and a lot of concrete work on problem solving. In addition to checking their professional knowledge acquired during the course, students acquire skills in this project: work in a team environment to solve a specific engineering problem, organization and project management, demonstration of product functionality, communication and presentation techniques of the tasks performed according to the level and expectations of the listeners. Great motivation for students (and teachers) is the ability to participate in international regattas. So far they have successfully completed two waterbikes (Roki1 and Snail).

About competition

Waterbike is a ship proppeled only by the strength of human muscles. According to the International Rules of the Student Waterbike Regatta (IWR), students design, build and drive a boat on the regatta. In practical work on the project, students use all the theoretical knowledge they have acquired through individual courses in the study. They are going through the process of establishing a waterbike from the design, construction, technology and the construction of the ship. Since there are no strict rules on the appearance of the boat, the solutions are innovative and describe only the knowledge and readiness of the team.

Disciplines:
IWR competition designed as a set of 8 disciplines that are evaluated individually and collectively. In some disciplines, different performances of waterbike are required, which gives a distinctly sporty character, so it is not unusual for teams to prepare in good condition throughout the year. The disciplines in which they compete are
